Thanks, Ann. David’s work of course demonstrates that the graphic displayed above is not quite correct – the ridge roads he studied (roughly contemporaneous with the first panel, 1800) often deviated far from the straight path, in order to avoid river crossings.
Are you familiar with this, by a relative of yours? It’s like all roads lead to Louise J. Jencks and her grandsons.
